ANNOUNCEMENT

The following info is about a course that will either count as your internship or that you can take even if you've already done an internship.

It's from Millie Bentley, a new addition to the College Park Scholars staff, whose whole job is to do what's described below (for all CPS programs). If you think you MIGHT be interested, give her a call or e-mail her and ask her to tell you more about it.

Are you still thinking about your spring course schedule? Are you looking for something new? We'd like to invite you to register for a new 3-credit course this spring: Discovery Projects: "Exploring Community" (CPS 258C)!

Discovery Projects are a new approach to learning: you will conduct primary source research with your peers under the mentorship of CPS faculty and staff. Unlike regular courses, there will only be a few class meetings, and most of your work will be completed in small groups. At the end of the semester, you will have completed an activities log and created a culminating project of your choice. Unlike regular courses, you will do research by conducting interviews, ethnographic observations, and content analyses. You may not need to go to the library, and you certainly won't need to write a paper! The objectives of Discovery Projects are to give you opportunities to:

• practice "applied research"
• hone your written and oral communication skills
• engage in career clarification
• work one-on-one with faculty

Throughout this course you will explore the concept of "community" as it applies to your campus. By familiarizing yourself with the services and resources available to children and family on campus, you will learn of the complex challenges faced by child and youth advocates. Throughout the semester you will engage in a variety of structured activities that will help you to "map" your campus as a community for children and families. At the end of the semester, you will compile this information and create one of the following: a directory of resources, a map of campus, a web-site, or another project of your choice!
