A. Paint-Branch Elementary School - After School Tutoring/Mentoring Program
Where: Paint-Branch Elementary School
When: Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Monday Dates: Feb 16, 23; March 2, 9, 16, 30; April 6, 13, 20, 27; May 4, 11.
Thursday Dates: Feb 19, 26; March 5, 12, 19; April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; May 7.

  1. Students will tutor and mentor first through sixth graders, one-on-one, at Paint- Branch Elementary School.
  2. Students will develop a learning contract with a specific Paint-Branch student (with whom they will be working throughout the semester) concerning the completion of homework and a reward system for completed assignments. They will also design a special project (something fun for the kids) to work on when homework has been completed.
  3. Students will meet at least twice over the semester during the colloquium period to share with each other the progress and efficacy of their contracts.
  4. Students will interview a teacher about the challenges of motivating first through sixth graders and how they encourage students to learn. Students will report on what they learned from the interview and evaluate the strategies they used to motivate their own students in a three page report due on the last day of tutoring.

B. The Children's Developmental Clinic
Where: Health & Human Performance Bldg. (North Gym)
When: Saturday mornings from 8:30-12:30.
Saturday Dates: Feb 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21, April 4, 11, 18, 25; May 2, 9.
  1. Students will attend two Saturday morning clinician training sessions.
  2. Students will work one-on-one with children ages infant to 12. Developmental skills targeted for improvement vary with age and include motor, academic and creative abilities. The students will keep a weekly journal recording the work they are doing with the children.
  3. Students will meet together at least twice during the semester, during the colloquium period, to discuss their experiences.
  4. The students will write a 3-page final paper describing the impact they had on the children, what they learned in the clinician training sessions, progress that they observed in the children over the semester, and how it is related to the theme of child advocacy.

C. Eastern Middle School Tutoring Program
Where: Eastern Middle School
When: Saturday mornings from 8:00-11:30.
Saturday Dates: Feb 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21, April 4, 11, 18, 25; May 2, 9.
  1. Students will tutor Middle Schoolers on Saturday mornings, either one-on-one or in groups, as needed.
  2. Students will record their experiences in a weekly journal. The journal may be used for free reflections on the children, to pose questions, make observations, and comment on the role they are playing in the students' lives. Do they feel that they are helping? Do they see any progress?
  3. The students will meet together at least twice during the semester, during the colloquium period, to share experiences, ideas and tutoring strategies.
  4. The students will write a three page final paper linking their experiences to the theme of child advocacy. They may comment on such topics as how they improved their students lives, what needs they were fulfilling, and what kind of program might meet this need on a wider scale.
