Advocates for Children

Re: Internships for students in the Advocates for Children program, College Park Scholars

College Park Scholars is a living-learning program at the University of Maryland. Included in the overall program are eight themes emphasizing various areas of concentration during the first two years of college. One of these is "Advocates for Children," which, through a variety of academic and extracurricular experiences, seeks to acquaint students with the needs of children and of ways to improve the lives of children.

Students in the Advocates for Children program are required to serve an internship to complement the courses, colloquia, and other experiences they have had in their study of children. Since the students represent a variety of majors and have different goals and interests related to children, there is a need for diverse opportunities in internship experiences, including working directly with children or in work that benefits or serves children.

The total time served in the internship will vary, that is, for one academic credit hour (30-35 hours), for two credits (55-60 hours), and for three credits (80-85 hours). While the internship is usually served over one semester, the service could be during the summer months or over other periods of time.

While the interns are to serve your organization, it is hoped that you will be able to provide them opportunities and experiences that will enrich their awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of children. In this context the interns are also likely to benefit professionally from being included in staff activities such as meetings, seminars, in-service training and social events.

Interns are expected to submit a report to me at the conclusion of their experiences. While much of this report will consist of the students' recording of observations and reflections thereof, you may be able to supply information or provide opportunities to gather material to enrich the reports.
