Paper Upload Instructions
due Monday (4/28/97)

These instructions are for putting your finished paper on your web site. You are welcome to do it by any method that works, but this method seems easiest to me. The two sections, "Overview" and "Detailed Instructions," are two versions of the instructions.

OVERVIEW:

1. After saving your paper on a disk, add a "P" in angle brackets: "<P>" between each paragraph. A quick way to do this is described below. Choose "Save As" from the "File" menu, change the name slightly, and click "OK."

2. This version of your paper (the one with the altered name) needs to be on any computer that is connected to the internet and that has "Netscape," "Fetch," and "SimpleText." If you're doing your paper on a different computer that doesn't have these, take it on a disk to one that does (or send it to yourself by e-mail if you know how to retrieve it this way).

3. Open Netscape and go to what you posted previously on your web site. It should be at "http://www.wam.umd.edu/~username/ac1.html" where "username" is your user name.

4. Choose "Document Source" from the "View" menu. This should automatically open "SimpleText" and bring up the document that you sent to your web site previously.

5. Open your paper, select the whole thing, choose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu. Go to the SimpleText Document, insert the curser in the space above "<BR><HR>Your Name, e-mail" and "Paste." Choose "Save."

6. Use Fetch to put this document on your web site, as before. It will automatically erase the old one if it has the same name.

7. Go to Netscape and press the "Reload" button to check that it worked.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:

1. After saving your paper on a disk, add a "P" in angle brackets: "<P>" between each paragraph. This is necessary for it to be displayed properly on your web site, because browsers like Netscape ignore "return" characters. A quick way to do this is with a global search and replace. Although word processing programs vary, it's pretty sure that you will find "Replace" somewhere on the "Edit" menu. A dialog box will come up, but before you can replace an invisible character like the "return" character, you have to know what it is called in that word processor. In my word processor, it is "^R"; in Microsoft Word, it is "^p" (the "^" symbol is above the "6" on the keyboard); to find out what it is in yours, just select from the end of a paragraph to the beginning of the next line, choose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu, go back to the "Replace" window, click in the "Find" (or similarly named field), and choose "Paste" from the "Edit" menu. You should see the code for the "return" character appear. In the "Replace with" (or similarly named field), choose "Paste" again and type "<P>"; you may want to choose "Paste" again for a nicer look. Click on "Replace All" and every instance of the "return" character will be replaced with the HTML code you need to separate paragraphs. After doing this, you may feel that it would have been easier to add "<P>" by hand after each paragraph; nevertheless, knowing how to do global search and replace is likely to be very helpful to you in the future.

Choose "Save As" from the "File" menu, change the name slightly (preferably NOT to "ac1.html"), click in the tiny window on the right with "Desktop" in it, and click "OK."

2. This version of your paper (the one with the altered name) needs to be on any computer that is connected to the internet and that has "Netscape," "Fetch," and "SimpleText." This should include every Mac (perhaps every IBM too) in every WAM lab. If you have a computer in your room, I suggest you copy these free programs onto it. If you would like help with this, please ask me. If you're doing your paper on a different computer that doesn't have these programs, take it on a disk to a computer that does. Put in the disk and open your (altered, newly named) paper.

3. Open Netscape and go to what you posted previously on your web site. You can either choose "Open Location..." from the "File" menu and type in your address, or, if "Show Location" is checked in the "Options" menu you can type it in after where it says "Location" (on the upper left of the main screen near the buttons) and press the "return" key. (If "Show Location" is not checked, select it and it will be). The address of your paper should be: "http://www.wam.umd.edu/~username/ac1.html" where "username" is your user name (the part of your e-mail address before the "@" symbol).

4. Whatever you put on your web site before should be displayed by Netscape. If it is not showing, it is probably because you did not follow the instructions exactly in the previous assignment, and put your paper template (title, your name, etc.) somewhere else; if so go to wherever you put it (try the address above without "/ac1.html"). When you have the template that you posted previously showing in Netscape, choose "Document Source" from the "View" menu. This should automatically open "SimpleText" and bring up the document that you sent to your web site previously.

If the computer you are using does not have "SimpleText" but DOES have "Fetch," you can still complete the assignment by using any word processor to open the "ac1.html" document that will be saved on the desktop (near the trash can), but you will have to remember that when you save you have to choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu, and choose a format called something like "Text Only."

5. Open your paper (or click on it if it is already open), select the whole thing (there is usually a "Select All" command on the "Edit" menu), choose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu. Go to the SimpleText Document--click on the window if you can see it; if not, choose "SimpleText" from the Applications menu, which is the menu all the way on the right end of the menu bar, a convenient way to switch back and forth between applications. Insert the curser in the space between "University of Maryland at College Park</H3><P>" and "<BR><HR>Your Name, e-mail" and choose "Paste" from the "Edit" menu. Choose "Save" from the "File" menu. IF THE NAME OF YOUR DOCUMENT IS NOT "ac1.html", choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu, type "ac1.html", click on the tiny window on the right named "desktop," and click "OK" or press the "return" key.

6. Use Fetch to put this document on your web site, as before. It will automatically erase the old one if it has the same name.

Here are the (slightly modified) instructions from the previous assignment in how to use Fetch to upload your document:

To find the "Fetch" program at one of the labs, go to the big menu that takes up the whole screen, choose "FTP Clients" (second to last under "Networking"), then click on "Fetch."

A window should come up. If it doesn't, or if at any time you have to cancel or otherwise lose the window, choose "New Connection" from the "File" menu. Next to "Host" type "wam.umd.edu"; next to "User" type your user name; next to "Password" type in your password; next to "Directory" type "../pub"; click "OK."

If you get an error message several times doing this, it's possible that you are not typing "../pub" exactly right. An alternative is to make the "Directory" box blank, which will take you to your "Home" directory, then click on the word "Home," scroll down one item to your user name, look below that in the window and find "pub" and double-click on it.

Once you are in your "pub" directory you are ready to upload. Click on "Put File." A window will come up. Click on the tiny window on the right named "Desktop." Find "ac1.html" (which should have been saved on the desktop--if not, go to the Finder and choose "Find..." from the "File" menu) and double-click on it. "Format" should be "Text" or "Raw Data." Click "OK."

7. Go to Netscape (click on the Netscape window or select "Netscape" from the Applications menu on the right end of the menu bar). If you are at "http://www.wam.umd.edu/~username/ac1.html" press the "Reload" button. This will tell Netscape to look at your web site again and display what's there now. If you want to change anything, you can go back to the SimpleText document named "ac1.html" and make changes, save, and repeat steps 6 & 7. I would advise making a back-up copy of "ac1.html" first before doing this!

Good Luck! If you need help, please do not hesitate to contact me.
